It wasn't far before Lavetta and Patricia arrived at the site of initiation. The little cabin rested close to the forest, and no one ever dared to venture far into the forest, not even for initiation.
The glamourous light that that lit up the sky before was slowly fading away, replaced by a moonless darkness. Even shadows are luxurious. People swarmed and creeped in all directions in a indisguishable mass. Lavetta tried to grab Pat's arm but was suddenly interrupted in her action.
"Hey there,"said a voice from behind Lavetta.
Lavetta turned around quickly. The voice was low and almost inaudible. She tried then to disguish the facial feature on the speaker's face from the darkness that engulfed them, and match it with a familiar face.
This was made very difficult as the glen that held the initiation was surrounded from all direction by huge, ancient trees that closed the whole village's population in snugly, letting no lights in from the sky. Only a single troch, the height of two grown men, situated in the middle of the glen, gave out the minimum amount of warth and luminosity.
The speaker's back faced the fire too, so Lavetta couldn't really tell who it was. She could only make out the rought outline of a man, several inches taller than she was, rather skinny, with very angular shoulders and his nose...
"Lavetta? I see you have quite the difficulty remebering me," said the stranger again, breaking off the awkward gaze from Lavetta.
"Oh, I am so sorry, I really, don't, recall that we have met before." Lavetta was fluttered suddenly and wondered why this person sounded so familiar.
"It has been quite a long time since we have met, but I am glad I have finally found you,"the voice was mysteriously irresistable, and velvety. Lavetta thought she could drown painlessly in the euphoria that it brought. But that was ruthless interrupted again by a sharply contrasting super-soprano of Pasch,"Vetty! Hurry up. This way. Your grandma is going to freak out on us any minute now. Where did you go?"
"What do you mean? i have been behind you the whole time. Didn't you hear someone talking to me?" Lavetta was slightly irritate."There he..."
"What someone? Are you chickening out? Come on!"Pasch started to walk away again.
But, he was right there, Lavetta added feebly inside her head, and followed Pasch towards the center of the gathering, the torch.
The drum beats that resonated inconspicuously since Lavetta's arrival was dying down around Lavetta as she trudged onto the small platform surrounding the torch. There the light and heat made her very self-counsious and uncomfortably aware of every minute detail of her clothing, and her shoes.
She was so unobtrusive, standing between Pasch and Ashley. These two were the center of attention in amidst group of ten 16 year girls.
There were also ten 16 year old boys standing on the other side of the torch. The Elder stood in the middle. The parents/guardians of the "initiated" stood immediately around the small circular uprise. Others formed bigger and looser circles that held them inescapable.
The drum has stopped completely.
Everyone grew silent. For more than a eternity, Lavetta held her head and eyes down, focused on nothing in particular. She knew the routine well. Every girl was taught this since they started to ounderstand the language.
It must on the night of the first new moon of the second half of the lunar year. Everyone must be present. The "initiated" and the ELder must be facing south. The torch must be of two men's height, made of cast iron, lit by the best fat off of the youngest cow of the village, etc, etc...
Then just before Lavetta was about to doze off in a snooze, Pasch gave Lavetta a light squeeze in the right hand.
The Elder was given the sign to begin:"All ye that come in faith, beholdthis sight with fear. The Divine has blessed us in bountifuls since the day of our founder, Benizette... Harvest is near. Our girls and boys have grown well, ripe and ready to bear the fruit of their ancestors. They shall be tranformed tonight...Let the good tradition not be forgotten. Oh the Mighty and Fierce never forsaken!"
"RAA HOO!!! RAA HOO!!!" the crowd was successfully riled up in a common spirit.
Then after several minute, the Elder saw they were already to receive the blood that was about to be spilt and raise his hands.
The crowd quieted down to a slow simmer. Vile excitement still ran through them.
"Ahm. It is time now, says the Divine. We must show our sincere allegience to Him the Mighty."Shouted the Elder.
Lavetta felt sick to her stomach looking at the shriveled little man. Everyone knew him well and he visited every family on a regualr routine. He gave out order and baded laws. He was the icon of the village. Symbol of wisdom. ugh. Lavetta was nauseous at the thought of giving blood. The irony and salty smell.
