3. Learning English through Drama
You are chairperson of your school Drama Club. A famous playwright is giving a lecture on how to write plays before the school breaks for summer. The lecture is very popular and has sold out quickly.
Write a letter to the playwright requesting she holds more lectures, describing how this could benefit the students in the school Drama Club and how keen club members are to hear her speak.
Address your letter to Ms Jones.

Dear Ms Jones
Request for more lectures
I am Chris Wong, the chairperson of Hong Kong Secondary School Drama Club. I am writing to you regarding the lecture you are giving at the Wanchai Civic Centre entitled: ‘The craft of writing plays’.
All members of our school Drama Club are great fans of your work, especially of your three-act play, ‘One school night on 8 Hennessy Road’. We held several performances of this play last year and received a lot of positive feedback. The audience was clearly blown away by the play. In particular, the witty banter in the play received a great many laughs. We highly respect and admire your ability to weave such a complex storyline into a hilarious script. Many students have since written in to ask about the playwright and the possibility of an actual meeting.
Thus, it was with great delight and anticipation that we went to sign up for your lecture, ‘The craft of writing plays’. Unfortunately, we found that all the tickets were sold out, even though the tickets had only been on sale for three days! L4 Actually, I know many non-club members in our school were also very disappointed to hear that tickets were unavailable. We had been eagerly looking forward to meeting you in person and listening to you share with us first-hand L8 expertise on playwriting.
On behalf of the Drama Club members, your fans and admirers, I would like to request that you please consider holding more lectures on ‘The craft of writing plays’. Many of our club members are interested in becoming playwrights, and any advice from you would be extremely beneficial. In the future, as we continue our passion for theatre and drama, we hope to begin writing and acting in our own plays. Our previous baby-step attempts at playwriting have received lukewarm responses from the audience, basically because our scripts lacked lustre and lure. We believe our plays flopped because we lacked basic skills and knowledge. As a veteran playwright, your lecture would help point us to the right direction and enable us to write better, more engaging scripts that move the audience. This is why we would love to hear you speak.
We hope you will consider our request favourably. Thank you for your kind attention and we look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely
Chris Wong
