You are captain of a new sports team in school. Over the weekend your team attended the finals of an inter-school sports competition.
You have been asked to write an article about the competition for the school’s online newsletter. Include information about the participating teams, the finals, how your team performed and which school became
the overall champion of the competition. Also, make up a headline for your article.
Inter-school Badminton Competition Finals
by Chris Wong
Last Sunday, our new badminton team took part in the finals of this year’s Inter-school Badminton Competition. This was the first time we had entered this competition! We felt very proud to be in the finals. We had beaten two very strong teams, Kowloon Secondary School and Tseung Kwan O Secondary School, to reach the finals.
The team we faced in the finals was Hong Kong Modern Secondary School. This school had won first place in the Inter-school Badminton Competition three times. As a result, our players were feeling a little nervous. However,
they were determined to do their best.
The whole school turned up to cheer our team on. This was very motivating for our players. The referee blew the whistle and the game started. Our team scored the first point and our supporters went wild! However, the opposing
team quickly scored the next point. The game was fast and thrilling to watch. Our doubles pair were kept on their heels throughout game time. Several times they nearly ran into each other on the court!
In the end, our team lost by four points. We clapped when the gold cup was given to the captain of the Hong Kong Modern Secondary School Badminton Team. When their captain was asked to speak, she said both teams had played well. She also said how pleased they were to welcome us to our first tournament. As the team captain, I went on stage to receive the silver cup from the organisers. I shook hands with Mr Smith Cheung, chairperson of the Hong Kong Schools’ Badminton Association Academy. He then asked me to say a few words. I smiled and said, ‘I want to thank our coach for helping us improve so much. I would also like to thank our team for playing so well and with such dedication.
Finally, thank you Hong Kong Modern Secondary School Badminton Team for being such good sports. We have really enjoyed our first badminton finals tournament. Thank you everyone.’
After the prize-giving, we all shook hands. We spent some time talking about the game. The captain of the Hong Kong Modern Secondary School Badminton Team said to our player, Sam Ho, ‘Next year, you could be the winners! Well done!’ Sam was delighted. We were all very impressed by such good sportsmanship.
