Life is a journey and in most parts, there is more pain than joy because the damage of pain goes far deeper than joy because we won't forget it so easily in nature (vulnerable creature). Therefore, in search of happiness in individual's definition becomes part of the key drive of life. What’s funny is there is nothing as pure and simple as we imagined in reality, it always appears as mix feelings, but that's not necessarily bad, because as long as it's exchanged for something more important and precious, we can bear with the complexity.
as you have said, pain can't bread happiness, it only makes you appreciate and desire happiness more than ever. it's like two sides of the same coin, one won't exist without the other.
I have similar wish as you do. i wish all the people in these world can have more intelligence (to understand each other better), courage (to support each other through all challenges)and strength (to build a pleasant relationship) to create, appreciate and care their own happiness. i wish each individuals can be less lonely and desperate; i wish they can get what their desired most without bury themselves in regrets and pain.
As we all know, past is past, what is done is done, just try to understand and appreciate and love yourself and those loved you more now (not later), I believe (through personal experience) life will become less painful and more beautiful!
I wish you have what you wanted, for those you loved and those loved you.
