晓兮伸出右手:“Hi, I am Alice Wang. Nice to meet you!(很高兴见到你)”

Johnny也伸出手来:“Hi, I am Johnny Wu. Nice to meet you too! Please take a seat. Before we start, do you need any water?(我也很高兴见到你!

I will have some water. I have been talking nonstop since 8 today.(好的。

      “Can I take a look at your resume?(我可以看看你的简历吗)” Johnny问道。

Johnny拿起桌上的矿泉水,拧开盖子,喝了一口,看了一眼面前的简历,继续说道:“Cecelia told me that you are the best candidate in your class. Why do you think she recommended you for this internship? Is it because you two are good friends?(Cecelia告诉我,你是班上最优秀的候选人。

晓兮有点懵,她想了想,说道:“ I think there are two reasons. First, I have very good financial and economics knowledge. Second, I am a great team player. We are in the same project team in a very challenging economics class. I showed her that I have a good understanding of the concepts and I can work with her and other people effectively.(我认为有两个原因。

That is what she told me. She said you two were in the same team in the international economics class. You are a great team player. You can explain very complex economics concept to other teammates in simple terms. She said you are the best person she has been working with.(对的。

晓兮没料到王希媛会给她这么高的评价,她有些不好意思的说:“I am glad to hear that. I like to work with her too.(我很高兴听到她这样说。

Johnny接着说道,“Investment banking is a people business. We need smart people who can work well with each other. Teamwork is an important quality we are looking for.(投资银行业务是一项以人为本的业务。

Johnny接着说:“okay, let us start the interview now.(好,让我们开始面试吧)”

他站起来把一张名片递给晓兮,晓兮也站起来双手接过,他坐下来说到:“You already know my name, Johnny Wu. I am a vice president in the index option trading desk in HSC. I have been in the company for almost 5 years. I worked in New York for 4 years and just transferred to Hong Kong last year. Before that, I was a student. I obtained a bachelor degree in physics in this university and a master degree in physics from Columbia University. That is my experience. Now can you tell me something about you?(你已经知道我的名字,Johnny Wu。

I am also from this university. I am a third year student in the Finance department. I am very interested in working in the investment banking industry and all the finance, economics, math and computer classes and research projects I have done equipped me with good financial knowledge and technical skills for the summer internship.(我也是这所大学的。

没等她把准备好的话说完,Johnny就打断了她:“Do you know what is an investment bank?(你知道什么是投行吗)”

这个也晓兮准备了,她马上说道:“An investment bank has two major business. First is to help clients raising capital through underwriting equity or debt. They also provide advices on mergers and acquisitions. All these activities are done in the investment banking department. Second is sales and trading. They can help clients trade stocks, bonds and derivatives.(投资银行有两项主要业务。

Johnny打断她继续问道:“what is the difference between an investment bank and a bank like, er, ICBC?(投资银行和工商银行一类的商业银行有什么区别)”

晓兮答道:“ICBC takes deposits from people and makes loans to corporates. An investment bank don’t take deposits.(中国工商银行吸收人们的存款并向企业提供贷款。

Johnny接着道:“That is right. A commercial bank like ICBC takes deposits and gives loans and makes money on the spread. We don’t. How do you think we make money?(没错。

晓兮道:“An investment bank makes money through underwriting fees, advisory fees and bid ask spread. I also heard that some traders make bets on markets and make money from that.(投资银行通过承销费、咨询费和买卖价差赚钱。

Johnny说道:“What do you want to do? Do you want to do sales or trading?(你想做什么?

这道题也是投行面试常见问题之一,晓兮接着答道:“I am more interested in trading because I am good with numbers and I like following markets. I think this summer internship will enable me to know more about different roles in the department and find out what is a best fit for me. So I also want to try sales in one rotation.(我对交易更感兴趣,因为我擅长数字,而且我喜欢关注市场。

Johnny突然有些严肃:“That is the right attitude. You are very young and you got all the information about the job from professors, friends and internet. It is important to keep an open mind rather than focus on a special role. Sometimes I hear candidates saying that they are only interested in derivatives trading. They don’t like cash equity because it is too simple. They don’t like sales because it is all about people. They have never worked in an investment bank. They don’t know anything. A good summer intern uses the opportunity to reach out and know more how different teams work together. In the process, he will know more about himself and what is best for him.(这才是正确的态度。

晓兮也急忙附和道:“Yeah, that’s right. I am open to both sales and trading.(是的,两种工作我都想试试)”
